Pool Pumps

The pump has to turn your water over, usually once every 6 to 10 hours, against the resistance of your pipes, filter and heater. Start from the flow you need (gallons divided by turnover minutes), then pick a pump whose maker curve delivers it at your system's head. Bigger isn't better: an oversized single-speed pump wastes power and can push water through the filter faster than it's rated for.

Federal efficiency rules made most standard-size in-ground filter pumps variable speed from July 2021, and the 2023 motor rule extends variable-speed requirements to replacement motors. A variable-speed pump runs slowly for most of the day, which cuts energy use sharply, and speeds up for cleaning, heating or water features.

Match the voltage (115V or 230V) and the plumbing size (1.5 or 2 inch) to your pad, and check whether the pump is self-priming if it sits above the water level.

• Size by flow. Gallons / (turnover hours x 60) gives the flow you need; the pump size calculator does the rest.
